Billionaire Elon Musk has reacted sharply to the EU after the European Commission fined social media platform "X" 120 million euros for violating transparency rules.

Musk's comments come a day after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the European Commission's fine was an attack on the American people. The billionaire said in his response that the European Union should be abolished.

"The EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries so that governments can better represent their people ," Musk said in his response.

The European Commission imposed a 120 million euro fine on Friday on Elon Musk's social media platform "X", formerly known as "Twitter", for the first time under the Digital Services Act, after a two-year investigation.

At the center of the investigation is the blue check mark, previously used to signal official accounts for free, but now sold for 7 euros per month, which risks confusing users about the authenticity of identities.

Under the new "X" settings, an account with a checkmark may not signal a real user and could instead be a bot, the Commission said. As a result, it imposed a financial fine for violating EU DSA rules. /CNA
