Storm 'Byron' hits Greece / Schools closed, power outages in some areas

A powerful storm called 'Byron' has hit dozens of regions across Greece.

Greek media report that residents are facing flooding and power outages, while the closure of schools for Friday has been announced in the Attica region.

The storm also caused disruption to road signs and road closures.

Firefighters were called to Elefsina, Aspropyrgos and Piraeus to help stranded residents and manage flooding. Western Attica recorded the heaviest rainfall, especially in Vlychada, Vilia and Salamina.

Storm Byron moved into Attica around 5pm on Thursday, after previously causing damage to Rhodes, Zakynthos, Laconia, Crete, Kefalonia, Central Macedonia, Thessaly and Evia, leaving behind flooded rivers, landslides and traffic jams on major roads. /CNA
