NATO will continue to buy weapons from the US for Ukraine

NATO countries agreed at a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels to continue spending billions on arms and ammunition for Ukraine next year. At least one billion US dollars (900 million euros) worth of US-made weapons will be purchased each month.

This concerns the purchase of interceptor missiles for air defense systems, but also for offensive systems, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said. A total of about $15 billion may be needed, it added.

Germany promises millions more soon

Germany, according to Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, will also participate with a significant volume. The Christian Democratic minister stated that Germany will pay a total of 200 million dollars (about 172 million euros) for two new packages of weapons from the US for Ukraine.

This amount will not be counted for 2026. The weapons will be purchased jointly with Poland, Norway and the Netherlands in a package already financed with 500 million dollars. Minister Wadephul also stated that Germany will pay an additional 25 million euros to a NATO fund to equip soldiers with the necessary equipment for the winter and for health care.

Open issues after the Witkoff-Putin meeting

Rutte considers the outcome of the ongoing talks on the possibility of ending the war in Ukraine to be uncertain. Against this background, it is important that Ukraine can negotiate from the best possible military position with Russia.

Foreign Minister Wadephul was even more pessimistic. He said that he welcomes all talks aimed at ending the war. But at the moment he does not see any serious will from the Russian side to enter into a mode of talks.

Following talks between US envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukraine has sent its chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, to Brussels and the US for consultations. He had the opportunity to meet with the national security advisers of NATO countries as well as with European heads of state and government, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted. After that, a meeting with the US will be prepared. /DW
