Hungary to challenge EU decision on Russian energy imports

Hungary will challenge the European Union's decision to gradually phase out Russian energy sources. The case will be taken to the EU Court of Justice, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on December 3.

EU member states have agreed to phase out Russian gas imports by the end of 2027, part of efforts to end the bloc's decades-long dependence on Russian energy. The decision was made despite opposition from Hungary and Slovakia.

Slovakia is also considering its legal options against the EU order, as both countries remain heavily dependent on gas and oil supplies from Moscow and fear that more costly alternatives would damage their economies.

"Acceptance and implementation of this Brussels order is impossible for Hungary," Szijjarto said during a statement broadcast on his Facebook page.

He said that this action violates the EU's founding document and constitutes a sanctions measure disguised as trade policy.

Szijjarto said Hungary will formally submit the case to the EU's highest court once the decision is finalized in Brussels.

He added that he had spoken with his colleague from Slovakia about this issue and that they had agreed to coordinate.

On Wednesday, the Slovak government, which like Hungary has maintained relations with Russia despite Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, discussed its legal options but did not say what action it would take.

Slovakia last month signaled that it would consider legal avenues, stressing that much would depend on how the European Commission would fulfill guarantees about potential supply shortages or price increases.
