Republicans win Tennessee primary, narrower than expected

Republicans have won the hotly contested Tennessee congressional elections, US media predict, after a race that was seen as a test of whether Democrats can return to politics next year.

With all counties now reporting results, Republican Matt Van Epps is on track to defeat Democrat Aftyn Behn by about nine percentage points.

That will ensure Republicans maintain their narrow majority in the House of Representatives. But their margin of victory is expected to be less than half of what it was last time, a little over a year ago, which has caused anxiety among some in the party.

"It was dangerous," said Republican Senator Ted Cruz as he reacted to the results.

The snap election drew national attention and huge spending by both parties ahead of next year's midterm elections.

Despite occurring in a reliably Republican district, the vote in the 7th Congressional District was also seen by some commentators as a test of President Donald Trump's popularity during his second term.

The failure to hold the seat could have been seen as a major blow to Trump's Republicans and an indication that his electoral appeal may be fading.

In the end, Republicans held the seat, but by a projected margin that appears to be well below the 22-point margin they reached in November 2024, the day Trump won the White House again.

The contested district stretches from the Alabama border to Kentucky and includes parts of the city of Nashville. No Democrat has been elected there in more than 40 years.

The seat was vacated after Republican Congressman Mark Green resigned in July to work in the private sector./ CNA, translated by BBC
