Airbus finds major problem in A320 aircraft

Airbus has confirmed that it is facing a new industrial quality issue involving metal panels used on some of its A320 family aircraft. The confirmation comes shortly after the company had to recall over 6,000 planes to fix a software problem.

International media previously reported on this case that Airbus had found problems with the body panels of a large number of A320 family aircraft.

Airbus said the good news was that none of the affected panels had been installed on planes already flying. But the news still sent the company's shares down, falling as much as 11% before closing nearly 6% lower.

"Airbus confirms that it has identified a quality issue affecting a limited number of A320 metal panels. The source of the issue has been identified, controlled and all newly produced panels meet all requirements," the company said in a statement.

Airbus uses both internal and external suppliers for its aircraft structures. The front fuselage of the A320 is generally manufactured in France, while the rear fuselage comes from Germany.

The company grounded more than half of its global A320 fleet over the weekend. This forced major airlines to halt operations globally, with India and the United States among the worst affected. /CNA
