Shein and Temu face calls for investigation from the US

The Shein and Temu companies are facing increasing pressure in the US, after two senior politicians called for investigations into them.

In Texas, state Attorney General Ken Paxton launched an investigation into Shein, a similar move targeting the firm in several European countries.

Nationally, Senator Tom Cotton called for a federal investigation into Shein and Temu, which he labeled the platforms as "Chinese communists" and accused them of intellectual property theft that has "destroyed" American firms. Shein said it took the concerns raised about its business practices seriously.

"We welcome constructive engagement with Attorney General Paxton," Shein said in a statement, adding that he will cooperate with authorities on the investigation.

Small American designers and brands have accused Shein of systematically copying their original creations, often just days after launch, and selling them at a much lower price.

Cotton also accused Temu of spreading sophisticated and deceptive materials on its platform, which has hundreds of millions of buyers.

He cited a US investigation which found that a significant portion of the items its researchers purchased at Shein and Temu were most likely counterfeit. /CNA
