White House launches media tracking program

The White House has launched a new subpage on its "Media Violators" website. It lists news sites, journalists, and stories that are alleged to have misled the public.

The top publications considered "media offenders of the week" were the Boston Globe, CBS News, and the Independent.

The journalists were deemed violators for stories they published about a video released last week by six Democratic lawmakers. The lawmakers, all military veterans or former intelligence officers, reminded the employees of these services that they are not obligated to follow illegal orders.

In a video posted online last week, the lawmakers said: “Today, threats to our Constitution come not only from outside, but also from within us.” “Our laws are clear: you can refuse illegal orders. ... You must refuse illegal orders.

"No one is obligated to carry out orders that violate the law or our Constitution," they added. US President Donald Trump called the deputies' actions "treasonous" and "treasonous."

What does the 'media offenders' page look like?

The site features a "hall of shame for violators" with a list of stories that the White House considers to be untrue.

Each story is explained and classified into categories such as "lie", "lack of context" or "left-wing deviation".

The White House said the site is "a registry of false and misleading media stories determined by the White House."

The site also features a chart listing media outlets that the administration claims have reported incorrectly. The Washington Post tops the list, followed by MSNBC (recently rebranded as MS NOW), CBS News, CNN, The New York Times, Politico and The Wall Street Journal.

There is also a section with media outlets that the Trump administration says are "repeat violators of media law." /DW
