More than 70,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the Israeli offensive in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry. The death toll has also risen since the ceasefire came into effect on October 10, as Israel carried out airstrikes on Hamas targets, claiming they had violated the agreement.
Figures from the Gaza Health Ministry have been widely used throughout the war and are seen as reliable by the United Nations (UN) and international institutions. But Israel has consistently disputed the data published by Gaza authorities.
The war in Gaza began after Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and took 251 hostages in their attack on southern Israel. Israel's retaliatory offensive has devastated entire families. Public health experts have said that before the war, Gaza had robust population statistics and better health information systems than most countries in the Middle East. /CNA
