Escalating tensions with the US/Foreign embassies in Venezuela on alert

Foreign embassies in Venezuela have been on heightened alert as international tensions have escalated in recent days. Many Western missions have reportedly already revised their opening hours and strengthened security protocols, pending further developments.

The Portuguese Foreign Ministry has reportedly issued an order to change opening hours and place its embassy in Caracas on permanent alert, without a specific timeframe, reflecting concerns among European countries about the safety of their personnel.

The situation was worsened by the warning of United States President Donald Trump, who announced that the airspace over and around Venezuela should be considered completely closed.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had previously urged airlines to exercise increased caution when flying over Venezuela, citing deteriorating security conditions and increased military activity. This led many international airlines to suspend flights to Caracas, further isolating the country and limiting the ability of diplomatic personnel to travel.

The combination of warnings, flight cancellations and increased military activity in the Caribbean is creating an environment of uncertainty, which has led embassies to consider scenarios of further limiting their operations or even partially evacuating staff.
