Meeting with Patriarch Bartholomew/Pope Leo in Turkey: Let us pray for the unity

Pope Leo XIV, during his visit to Turkey, met with leaders of the Eastern and Western churches in Iznik, one of the most important places in the history of Christianity, and prayed for unity among Christians.

"This declaration of faith is of fundamental importance for Christians who walk towards full unity," the Pope said.

Pope Leo XIV met with Patriarch Bartholomew I, head of the Greek Patriarchate of Constantinople, and other religious leaders. The meeting was held in the area where the first synod was held on the shores of Lake Nicaea.

The ceremony, which included the singing of Catholic and Orthodox hymns, was held in the area where falling water levels have exposed the remains of the Basilica of Saint Neophyte. The basilica is believed to have been built on the site of the church where the council was held.

In addition to Catholic and Orthodox representatives, the ceremony was attended by clergy from the Syriac, Coptic, Armenian, Malankara, Protestant and Anglican churches. /CNA
