Video/ Ballistic missile test fails in Russia

The Russian armed forces conducted a ballistic missile test on Friday in Orenburg in the Urals, but the missile crashed seconds after launch.

It was reportedly an SS-19 (NATO reporting name Stiletto) carrying the Avangard hypersonic missile. This is a system that maneuvers at very high speeds before reaching its target, making it very difficult, if not impossible, to intercept.

Videos published online show the rocket taking off, then a few seconds later crashing and hitting the ground with a powerful explosion.

Local authorities said the explosion posed no danger to the population and that residents in the area did not need to leave their homes. Yasni is a test site for long-range missile systems that can carry nuclear warheads. /CNA
