Trump warns of ground operations against Venezuelan drug traffickers

The United States will "very soon" take ground action against suspected drug traffickers from Venezuela, US President Donald Trump said.

"You may have noticed that people don't want to send shipments by sea, and we're going to start stopping them by land as well. Land is easier, but we're going to start very quickly," Trump said while speaking via video link to US military service members on Thursday.

There is still no reaction from Venezuela to this announcement by the American leader.

The Trump administration has been weighing Venezuela-related options to combat what it has portrayed as Nicolas Maduro's role in supplying illegal drugs that have killed Americans. Maduro has denied having any connection to the illegal drug trade.

U.S. forces in the region have so far focused on counternarcotics operations, although the military force deployed far exceeds what is needed for these operations. U.S. troops have carried out at least 21 raids on suspected drug-trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean since September, killing at least 83 people.

Reports of a new move have increased in recent weeks, as the US military deployed troops to the Caribbean at a time of worsening relations between the US and Venezuela./ Rel
