Video/ Erdogan welcomes Pope Leo with state ceremony

Pope Leo XIV was welcomed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Presidential Complex in Ankara today, with an official ceremony accompanied by military honors.

Erdogan and the Pope headed to a specially designed ceremony area, where the national anthems of the two countries were played, accompanied by 21 cannon shots.

After Erdogan and Pope Leo XIV introduced the members of their teams, the two delegations withdrew for private talks within the framework of the official visit. Pope Leo XIV was earlier welcomed with an official ceremony in Bestepe.

Nearly seven months after his election as Pope, Leo XIV has undertaken his first trip abroad. This trip will take him to Turkey from November 27 to 30 and then to Lebanon on December 2. /CNA
