Ukraine corruption scandal: Security Council chief questioned

Senior Ukrainian security official Rustem Umerov, a key figure in peace negotiations with Moscow and Washington, was questioned as a witness by anti-corruption investigators probing Ukraine's biggest wartime corruption scandal, two local media outlets reported.

Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau invited Umerov to testify as part of its investigation into Timur Mindich, who is suspected of being the ringleader of a $100 million bribery scheme involving the state-owned nuclear power company, media reported.

They did not say when Umerov was questioned.

Umerov's spokesman did not respond to a Reuters request for comment. Authorities have not charged him with any wrongdoing. A NABU spokesman said the agency would not comment on the reports.

Umerov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, led Kiev’s delegation to peace talks with Russian representatives in Turkey this spring. Reuters reported this week, citing sources, that he had also met with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff in Miami this month to discuss a peace proposal.

The initial draft of that proposal was seen by Kiev and its European allies as too favorable to Moscow. A Ukrainian team, including Umerov, then negotiated a counterproposal in Switzerland with American officials.

NABU announced its investigation into the alleged bribery scheme two weeks ago, sparking a political storm that has become the biggest domestic threat to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's rule since Russia's invasion in 2022.

Seven people have been charged and five of them are currently in custody.

Ukraine's justice and energy ministers were dismissed over the scandal, although both denied any wrongdoing.

Umerov, who served as Ukraine's defense minister until a cabinet reshuffle in July, has previously said he met with Mindich to raise issues around a contract for the supply of protective vests./CNA, translated by Reuters
