The European Parliament has called on the European Union to ban children under 16 from accessing social media, to combat the rise in mental health problems in adolescents from overexposure to online platforms.
The call comes at a time when Australia is set to impose the world's first social media ban on children under 16 and while Denmark and Malaysia are also planning bans.
The EP resolution, supported by 483 votes in favour, 92 against and 86 abstentions, called for an EU-wide ban on children under 16 accessing online platforms, video platforms and artificial intelligence networks without parental consent and a complete ban for those under 13.
The effects of social media on children's health and safety have become a growing global concern. /CNA
