Pope Leo XIV departs for Turkey tomorrow/ Private meeting with President Erdogan

Pope Leo XIV is getting ready for his trip, as he is scheduled to arrive in Turkey around noon tomorrow, a visit previously announced by the Vatican.

The Pope will meet privately with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, before addressing Turkish authorities.

On Friday, in Nicaea, modern-day Iznik, the Pope will participate in an ecumenical prayer service marking the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council.

On Saturday, the Pope will celebrate Mass at Istanbul's Volkswagen Arena before traveling to Lebanon on Sunday. There, he will meet with groups including local authorities, Church leaders, representatives of other religions and young people.

Speaking to the media ahead of the Pope's trip, the Holy See's Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, said that Turkey was a cradle of Christianity, where the first communities were born.

"The Council of Nicaea laid the foundations of our faith: faith in Jesus Christ as fully divine and fully human," the Cardinal emphasized.

Cardinal Parolin also stressed the importance of the Pope's visit to Lebanon, which, he said, has made some progress in resolving the crisis that has affected the country in recent years.

In this context, the Cardinal suggested, the Pope's message would be encouraging and an invitation to continue and to have courage./CNA
