Former Peruvian president sentenced to 14 years in prison for bribery

Former Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra was sentenced today to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of bribery while he was governor of the southern region of Moquegua in the early 2010s.

Head of state from 2018 to 2020, Vizcarra, who at the time promised to crack down on corruption, was found guilty of receiving approximately $640,000 (550,000 euros) from construction companies in exchange for awarding contracts to Moquegua between 2011 and 2014.

Vizcarra, 62, denied the charges against him throughout the hearing, claiming he was the victim of political persecution. He was remanded in custody in August for 22 days over concerns he could flee. However, in September, an appeals court ordered his release pending his trial, which began a month later.

Martin Vizcarra is the fifth former president of Peru to be imprisoned, after Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), Ollanda Humala (2011-2016) and Pedro Castillo (2021-2022). /CNA
