After 29-year-old suspect Rahmanullah Lakanwal was identified yesterday as an Afghan national, the US suspended all immigration applications from Afghans.

US Citizenship and Immigration Services said the decision was made pending a review of "security and vetting protocols."

Reacting from Mar-a-Lago, US President Donald Trump called the attack an "act of terror", adding that he would take steps to remove the foreigners.

Lakanwal is believed to have arrived in the US in September 2021 along with tens of thousands of others who fled Afghanistan.

They were welcomed to the US under Joe Biden's program, which followed the Taliban's occupation of the country after the chaotic withdrawal of US forces.

But Trump said after the shooting that the US must now reconsider every foreigner who has entered the country from Afghanistan under Biden.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe told CBS that the suspected perpetrator was allowed to enter the US because of his previous work with the US government.

 

“ After Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Biden administration justified the shooting suspect’s bringing into the United States in September 2021 because of his previous work with the US government, including the CIA, as a member of a partner force in Kandahar, which ended shortly after the chaotic evacuation ,” Ratcliffe says./ CNA, translated by BBC
