Jordan asks Russia to stop recruiting its citizens after two of them were killed

Jordan has asked Russia to stop recruiting its citizens into the Russian Armed Forces after two Jordanian citizens were killed fighting for Moscow.

In a statement on Thursday, Jordan's Foreign Ministry called the recruitment "a violation of Jordanian and international law," saying it was "putting citizens in real danger."

Ministry spokesman Fuad al-Majali called on Jordanians to "report any attempts to recruit them into the Russian army" and warned them that they face legal and death risks.

He said that the Ministry "has asked the Russian authorities to stop the recruitment of Jordanians and to release from service the Jordanians registered so far."

According to him, the Ministry is also aware of online recruitment efforts.

Jordanian citizens are prohibited from joining the armed forces of a foreign country.

It is not known how many Jordanians may have been recruited, but hundreds of Jordanians live in Russia and more than 20,000 have studied in countries of the former Soviet Union, according to unofficial data.

At the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, when Moscow was supporting the rule of former President Bashar al-Assad in Syria, Russian President Vladimir Putin had said he wanted to recruit 16,000 fighters from the Middle East.

And, according to reports, around 2,000 regular Syrian troops were later sent to Russia./ REL
