Hong Kong fires: Death toll rises to 55

Firefighters and rescue workers continued their search for a second day on Thursday after a massive fire ripped through a complex of seven high-rise apartment buildings in Hong Kong. At least 55 people were killed and dozens more injured in what is the worst fire to hit the territory in decades.

Firefighters are battling one of Hong Kong's deadliest fires for a second day in a row on Thursday, struggling to control the blaze that has engulfed several high-rise buildings and killed at least 55 people.

Thick smoke continued to billow from the Wang Fuk Court complex in Tai Po district, a northern suburb near the border with the mainland, on Thursday morning.

The fire, which started on Wednesday afternoon local time, had spread to seven of the eight buildings in the complex. The city's fire department said the flames in four of the towers were under control by Thursday morning.

A firefighter was among the 55 people confirmed dead, officials said. At least 62 people were injured, many suffering from burns and inhalation injuries.

Three men, the directors and an engineering consultant of a construction company, were arrested in connection with the fires and are being investigated for manslaughter.

"We have reason to believe that those responsible for the construction company were grossly negligent," said Eileen Chung, a senior police supervisor.

Authorities suspected that some materials in the exterior walls of the high-rise buildings did not meet fire resistance standards, allowing the fire to spread rapidly.

Police also said they found Styrofoam, which is highly flammable, stuck to windows on each floor near the elevator lobby of the only intact tower./ CNA, translated by Euronews
