Romanian Defense Minister Resigns After Liing About University Degree

Romanian Defense Minister Ionut Mosteanu resigned this Friday, following a scandal regarding discrepancies in his CV caused by a journalistic investigation.

Romanian media wrote that the controversy erupted after a report that Mosteanu had falsely claimed in his first official CV that he had graduated from Athenaeum University, an institution that said he was never a student, prompting him to admit it was a "mistake" and present another diploma obtained in 2015.

In the official announcement on Friday, Mosteanu said he communicated his decision to resign to the president, the prime minister and the party leadership.

"Romania and Europe are under attack from Russia. Our national security must be protected at all costs. I do not want discussions about my education and the mistakes I made many years ago to distract those who now lead the country from their difficult mission," Mosteanu declared.

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan confirmed that he has taken into account Mosteanu's resignation as defense minister, adding that he will propose to the president that the temporary position be held by Radu Miruta, the economy minister. /CNA
