Powerful, almost simultaneous explosions have struck two tankers that are sanctioned for transporting Russian oil. The two ships, part of the so-called "shadow fleet," were off the coast of Turkey in the Black Sea. The two ships, the Gambian-flagged Kairos and the Virat, were reportedly en route to Novorossiysk.

The Kairos is sanctioned by the EU and the UK, while the latter is sanctioned by the EU and the US. The Virat is said to have been stationary in the western Black Sea for most of 2025.

The two ships, part of the so-called "shadow fleet", were near the coast of Turkey in the Black Sea. According to reports, the two ships "Kairos" and "Virat" are Gambian-flagged, which were heading towards Novorossiysk.

"Kairos" is sanctioned by the EU and the UK, while the second by the EU and the US. Virat is said to have been stationary in the western Black Sea for most of 2025. In the footage posted online, a thick cloud of smoke is seen rising from one ship and flames from the other.

Meanwhile, the explosions have also been confirmed by Turkish authorities. It is not yet clear whether there are any injuries. The causes of the explosion are still unknown, or if there are suspicions that it could have been an attack.  /CNA
