Moldova temporarily closes airspace due to drones

Moldova, which borders Ukraine, closed its airspace for an hour overnight after new drone incursions, the Defense Ministry said on November 29.

This small country, bordering war-torn Ukraine and NATO member Romania, has repeatedly faced airspace violations since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The latest incident comes after Moldova reported earlier this week that a drone had been shot down on its territory, out of a total of six drones that had crossed its airspace.

Moldova's airspace "was temporarily closed for about one hour and 10 minutes, between 22:43 and 23:53, as an emergency measure, after two unidentified drones flew illegally over the national territory, creating a direct threat to aviation safety," the Defense Ministry said in a press release on Saturday.

She added that the Gerbera-type drones had not been detected by Moldovan radars, but their incursion had been "confirmed by Ukrainian border authorities."

"No objects, fragments or elements posing a danger to the population have been identified and both drones have left national airspace, entering deep into Ukrainian territory," the Interior Ministry said.

However, she said, two planes coming to Chisinau from Paris and Barcelona during the airspace closure diverted their flights to Romania.

Another plane preparing to depart from Chisinau was temporarily grounded.

" Moldova strongly condemns these illegal and dangerous actions, which put the safety of civil flights and human lives at risk," the Defense Ministry said, describing the violations as "hostile acts of intimidation and destabilization."

On Wednesday, Moldova summoned the Russian ambassador for talks over the downing of a drone, placing the downed drone in front of the Foreign Ministry and handing him a note of protest./ REL
