NATO's top admiral warns: We could have a more aggressive response to

NATO is considering being more aggressive in responding to cyberattacks, sabotage and airspace violations by Russia, particularly with drones. The Atlantic alliance's top military officer, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, said this in an interview with the Financial Times.

"We are studying everything... On the cyber front, we are somewhat reactive. We are considering the possibility of being more aggressive or proactive rather than reactive," said Dragone, chairman of NATO's military committee.

Following European complaints about Russian hybrid attacks such as drones or cyberattacks, some diplomats, particularly in Eastern Europe, have urged NATO to respond more forcefully, rather than limiting itself to soft responses. Dragone also said that a preemptive strike could be considered a defensive action.

"Being more aggressive than the aggressiveness of our counterparts could be an option. The issues are the legal framework, the jurisdictional framework, who will do it?" said the NATO admiral.

NATO has been successful with its "Baltic Sentry" mission, in which ships, aircraft and naval drones have patrolled the Baltic Sea, preventing a repeat of numerous incidents, such as the cable cuttings in 2023 and 2024 by ships linked to Russia's shadow fleet, designed to evade Western sanctions.

"Since the start of Baltic Sentry, nothing has happened. So that means this deterrence is working ," Dragone added.

According to the admiral, NATO's core mission remains the prevention of future aggression.

"The way in which deterrence is achieved - through retaliation, through preemptive strikes - is something we need to fully analyze because there could be even more pressure on this in the future," Dragone added. /CNA
