US Special Envoy Witkoff Meets with President Putin Tomorrow

US President Donald Trump's special envoy for peace missions, Steve Witkoff, will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. The meeting in Moscow was confirmed by a White House official to US media.

Witkoff leaves for Russia on Monday. The special envoy's trip follows negotiations between U.S. and Ukrainian officials in Florida on Sunday, with both delegations calling the talks productive.

Security guarantees for Ukraine and any territorial concessions to Russia are said to be the most difficult sticking points in Trump's proposal to end the nearly four-year war.

President Trump said Sunday that talks between U.S. and Ukrainian officials are going well and added that Russia would like to see the war end.

In October, Trump imposed sanctions on two of Russia's largest oil companies, citing frustration with Putin over his failure to broker a ceasefire with Ukraine. But the president has for months blocked Congress from passing a bipartisan bill to sanction buyers of Russian oil and has kept long-range missiles on the move in Ukraine to urge Moscow to join peace talks./CNA
