Hong Kong fire tragedy: 13 people arrested, death toll rises to 151

Hong Kong authorities have arrested 13 people on suspicion of "involuntary manslaughter" in connection with last week's massive fire that engulfed seven buildings in a complex in Tai Po. Emergency services have described the blaze as the deadliest in the city in 75 years.

The death toll has risen to 151 and is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue. Around 40 people are still missing.

Officials said anti-corruption authorities had arrested 13 people so far in connection with the disaster, including directors and an engineering consultant of a construction company, and had immediately launched a comprehensive investigation.

Hong Kong's Chief Secretary, Eric Chan, said seven out of 20 samples tested of mesh used on scaffolding around the towers failed to meet fire-resistance standards.

Initial tests had found the samples to be code compliant, but Chan said the cheaper, non-compliant mesh was placed in hard-to-access areas in an attempt to avoid detection, describing it as a "shameful act".

The arrests were followed by warnings from national security authorities that they would take strict measures against anyone deemed to be using the incident to incite "anti-China" sentiment. /CNA
