Microsoft CEO: We are investing in European technology

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said his company is increasingly considering Europe as a key region for its artificial intelligence strategy as the continent seeks to strengthen its digital independence from the United States and China. In an interview, Nadella stressed that digital sovereignty is a critical consideration for any nation.

Nadella's comments come as European leaders increasingly warn that the continent cannot afford to cede the "digital sphere" to global superpowers the US and China without serious consequences.

At the Digital Sovereignty Summit in Berlin on November 18, Germany and France unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening European technological independence, including in cloud services, artificial intelligence and public procurement. Among the measures were commitments to favor European solutions in public contracts, to protect European data from foreign surveillance and to confront the market dominance of major US cloud providers.

Nadella acknowledged China's strength in human capital and open-source innovation, but emphasized the continued leadership of the U.S. He argued that Europe could emerge as a big winner in the global AI landscape if it focuses on implementing and spreading the technology across industries.

"Honestly, the country that's really going to win is going to be the one that can scale broadly with artificial intelligence, use it broadly across its economy, across its healthcare sector, across its manufacturing sector, across its education sector, and grow its economy. Germany or Europe could be the big winners as long as they do the hard work to introduce the technology, retrain and use that technology," Nadella said. /CNA
