Israeli bombings continue in Gaza / Five Palestinians killed, including two

Five Palestinians, including two children, were killed by Israeli army shelling in the southern Gaza Strip. The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement about the attack that they had struck a Hamas terrorist in retaliation.

According to the Civil Defense, an emergency relief organization affiliated with the Hamas government, Israel targeted tents of displaced people in the Palestinian enclave with rockets, despite a ceasefire agreement between the Israeli army and the Palestinian Islamist movement in force for the past two months.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on the other hand, accused Hamas of continuing to violate the ceasefire and carry out terrorist acts against the Israeli armed forces, according to a statement issued by his services.

"Our policy is clear: Israel will not tolerate any attacks on soldiers and will retaliate for such actions," he added.

The Israeli military announced on Sunday that it had killed more than 40 Palestinian militants last week during operations targeting underground tunnels near Rafah.

Hamas said early last week that its fighters were trapped in tunnels in an Israeli-controlled area of ??the Gaza Strip and that it was trying to ensure they were allowed to leave, a claim that Israel has denied.

The ceasefire agreement came into effect under US pressure on October 10, after two years of war sparked by an unprecedented incursion by Hamas' military wing into southern Israel on October 7, 2023. Both sides frequently accuse each other of violating the agreement. /CNA
