After 30 years of war/ Trump hosts leaders of Congo and Rwanda, peace agreement

US President Donald Trump has hosted top leaders from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, who today signed a US-facilitated peace deal to help end decades of deadly fighting in eastern Congo.

The agreement aims to end the conflict in eastern Congo, while simultaneously helping the US government and American companies gain access to critical minerals in the region.

"Today, violence and destruction come to an end and the entire region begins a new chapter of hope and opportunity, harmony, prosperity and peace," President Donald Trump told the foreign ministers of both countries at a meeting at the White House.

The agreement was signed earlier in the State Department's Treaty Room under a portrait of Colin Powell, the first African-American to hold the position of top US diplomat.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio called it a significant moment after 30 years of war.

The Central African nation of Congo has been ravaged by conflict with more than 100 armed groups, the most powerful backed by Rwanda, that have killed millions of people since the 1990s./CNA
