Greece on red alert/Storm "Byron" brings flooding and dangerous storms

Storm Byron entered its most dangerous phase on Thursday evening, prompting Greece's 112 emergency alert service to activate repeated signals in half the country.

Residents in Magnesia, Larissa, Sporades, Evia, Chios, Samos, Ikaria, Dodecanese, Crete and Cyclades were urged to avoid unnecessary travel as extreme conditions intensified.

In Western Attica, the storm has caused massive flooding. Homes in Nea Peramos have been inundated, while authorities have issued evacuation warnings for ground floors and basements in Mandra and Megara.

Drivers were stranded along the Athens-Corinth National Highway near Megara, where rapid streams formed due to heavy rainfall.

Fire services have received numerous calls for assistance and water pumping, especially near the local KTEO inspection center.
