A massive fire has engulfed a nightclub in Goa, India, killing 25 people. Most of the victims are suspected to be club staff, while the rest are tourists.
Foreign media reports that the fire started after a gas cylinder exploded in the club's kitchen. Meanwhile, it is reported that six people are in hospital, in stable condition. The scene will be surrounded by police until the investigation is completed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the fire in a post on social media and said it was a deeply saddening event.
Goa is a former Portuguese colony on the Arabian Sea. Its nightlife, sandy beaches and resorts attract millions of tourists every year. About 5.5 million tourists visited Goa in the first half of the year, government data showed, with 270,000 visitors from abroad.
India has seen a number of deadly fires at entertainment venues in recent years. A fire in a three-story building killed 17 people in the southern city of Hyderabad in May, while a fire at a hotel in the northeastern city of Kolkata left 15 dead a month ago. /CNA
