1 million euros undeclared seized at the border crossing in Merdare

Kosovo Customs announced that around 1 million euros in undeclared cash were seized at the border crossing in Merdare – which connects Kosovo with Serbia.

The discovery of this amount of money was made after customs officials selected a vehicle for a detailed inspection.

"The vehicle was initially checked through the X-ray scanning device, where the first indications of the existence of a suspicious modified space on its floor were identified. Following these indications, Kosovo Customs requested assistance from Border Police officials, who provided technical support through the fiberoptic device ," the announcement said.

During a joint check by Customs and Police officials, undeclared money was found "hidden in an improvised space inside the vehicle."

"According to initial estimates, the amount of cash is suspected to be around 1 million euros," said Dogana.

According to this institution, the use of advanced technology for controls, such as X-ray scanners, remain key tools for detecting cases of smuggling and preventing illegal activities.

In January of this year, a mobile Rapiscan scanner, donated to Kosovo by the United States, was installed in Merdare.

When this scanner – worth $3 million – was installed, the US Embassy said it would help Kosovo authorities combat smuggling. /REL
