Army executes Mexico's most wanted man, El Mencho

Mexico's most wanted man and the leader of the feared Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) drug cartel has been killed by the military in a security operation.

Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," was reportedly killed during a military operation carried out Sunday morning in the central-western state of Jalisco.

Mexico's defense ministry announced that El Mencho died during an airlift following the military operation, according to Reuters news agency.

The CJNG has spread from its original power base in the state of Jalisco to have a nearly nationwide presence throughout Mexico.

Throughout Sunday, there were unconfirmed reports of burning cars and sightings of armed men on the streets of Jalisco and other areas.

The US had previously offered a $15 million reward for information leading to El Mencho's capture.

The US State Department issued a shelter-in-place advisory for US citizens in the state of Jalisco, the state of Tamaulipas and areas of the states of Michoacan, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon. /CNA
