Supreme Court ruling on tariffs/EU: US must respect agreement

The European Commission warned that unpredictable tariffs undermine the stability of markets and create uncertainty in international supply chains. 

Following the Supreme Court's decision that struck down some of the most extensive tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, Brussels is demanding "full clarity" and respect for commitments.

In a statement issued this Sunday, the European Commission states that the current situation is not creating the conditions for "fair, balanced and mutually beneficial" transatlantic trade and investment, as envisaged in the EU-US Joint Declaration of August 2025.

"An agreement is an agreement. As the US's largest trading partner, the EU expects commitments to be respected," the response said.

Last year, American and European officials signed an agreement that imposes a 15% import tax on 70% of European goods exported to the U.S. Trade for the 27-member EU is managed by the European Commission.

President Donald Trump reacted sharply to the court's decision and declared that he is targeting a global tariff of 15%, up from the 10% he had announced a day earlier. /CNA
