Wooden boat carrying migrants capsizes/5 dead and around 20 missing in Crete

At least five people have died and around 20 others are missing after a migrant boat capsized off the southern coast of Crete today.

The incident took place in the waters near Kaloi Limenes, in the Heraklion regional unit, where rescuers said there were up to 50 people on the wooden boat.

According to Greek state broadcaster ERT, the accident occurred when one of two merchant ships dispatched by the Greek Search and Rescue Center approached the distressed vessel and as the migrants attempted to climb up ladders lowered from the ship, the small vessel suddenly shifted and capsized.

A major search and rescue operation is underway, involving coastguard vessels, passing merchant ships, a helicopter and an Air Force plane. A naval unit patrolling south of Gavdos is also speeding towards the area./CNA
