Kosovo approves 19th package of EU sanctions against Russia

Kosovo has taken punitive measures against Russia, due to its war against Ukraine, by approving the 19th package of European Union sanctions against Moscow.

The package, approved at a cabinet meeting of Prime Minister Albin Kurti on Friday morning, also includes sanctions against Belarus.

Kosovo's Foreign Minister, Glauk Konjufca, said that Kosovo aims to promote peace and freedom, and that the Government's decision contributes to the continuation of close cooperation with the EU and the United States. Kosovo has approved all of the bloc's previous packages against Russia.

What does the package contain?

The 19th package, adopted in October last year, significantly increases pressure on Russia's war economy, targeting key sectors such as energy, finance, military-industrial bases, special economic zones, as well as supporters and beneficiaries of its aggressive war.

A complete ban on Russian Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and a further crackdown on the “shadow” fleet represent the strongest sanctions yet on Russia’s vital energy sector.

The LNG ban will come into effect in two phases: short-term contracts will end after six months, while long-term contracts will start from January 1, 2027.

Strong measures also target financial services and infrastructure, including for the first time cryptocurrencies, as well as trade.

The measures also affect the service sector and strengthen tools against sanctions evasion. With this package, the number of ships listed in Russia's "shadow" fleet reaches a total of 557.

Kosovo aligned itself with the West immediately after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and has since endorsed EU and US packages against Moscow.

The ongoing war has claimed the lives of more than 10,000 civilians in Ukraine, according to the United Nations. At least 40 percent of the population is in need of some form of humanitarian assistance. /REL
