Riots escalate in Iran, protests reignite / Gunfire and tear gas fired

Tensions rose sharply in Iran on Sunday, as anti-government protests erupted at several major universities and on the streets of the capital, amid reports of tear gas and gunfire from security forces.

Students gathered at the University of Tehran and Ferdowsi University of Mashhad to protest for the victims of the protests, before the gatherings escalated into clashes.

According to reports from opposition sources, gunshots were heard in several areas of Tehran, while security forces used tear gas to disperse the crowds, mainly composed of young people.

On Vali Asr Street, eyewitnesses claimed harsh intervention against demonstrators.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was mentioned by some sources as part of the operations to control the situation, although authorities have not released a detailed statement on the incidents.

Opposition figure Ali Safavi, affiliated with the National Council of Resistance of Iran, said students at several universities were chanting slogans against the leadership and against any form of dictatorship. He also alleged symbolic activities against senior figures in the regime.

On the other hand, Iranian state media reported that individuals disguised as students attacked pro-government students with stones, presenting a different version of events.

Protests were also reported at Khajeh Nasir Toosi University of Technology, as well as other campuses, where clashes between pro- and anti-regime groups increased tensions.

The developments come at a sensitive time for Iran, amid ongoing tensions with the US and discussions over Tehran's nuclear program, raising concerns about further destabilization of the domestic and regional situation.

Iranian authorities have not yet released an official toll of those injured or arrested./ CNA
