A tip about a romantic encounter led Mexican authorities to the location of drug lord Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, known as the head of the CJNG cartel, who was killed in an operation in the state of Jalisco in Mexico.

Authorities did not follow the trail of money or drugs, but his romantic partner, who was part of the information that led to him.

The operation began when Mexican secret services identified a man who was related to one of Mencho's girlfriends and took him to Mencho in Tapalpa, a mountainous area in Jalisco.

On Sunday, special forces tried to arrest him, but fierce fighting ensued and Mencho was seriously injured along with his two guards. They were captured and transported by helicopter to a medical center, but died en route.

During the unrest that followed his death, security forces reported around 70 arrests and 34 suspected cartel members killed, including members of the National Guard.

Authorities saw helicopters, drones and a small plane over Tapalpa as the city was engulfed in riots and roads were blocked.

There are fears of a new wave of violence in Mexico after the elimination of one of the most influential leaders of organized crime.
