Powerful winter storm hits northeastern US/New York bans travel

A historic winter storm has battered the northeastern United States, putting about 59 million people under extreme weather warnings and causing massive power outages, flight cancellations and travel bans in several states.

New York City has imposed a complete curfew, with schools closed and roads, highways and bridges open only for emergencies. New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency across the state and mobilized the National Guard.

A state of emergency has also been declared in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Authorities have urged citizens to stay home and avoid all non-essential travel.

According to the National Weather Service, snowfall amounts could reach 30 to 60 centimeters, with up to 70 centimeters in some areas. Winds are expected to reach 112 kilometers per hour, increasing the risk of falling trees, power outages and coastal flooding.

So far, more than 150,000 people have been left without power in the region. Meanwhile, about 5,500 flights have been canceled nationwide, according to data from FlightAware.

Meteorologists consider this the most powerful storm to hit the region in nearly a decade, while travel conditions are described as "extremely hazardous" and in some areas "nearly impossible."/ CNA
