Moscow proposes building a nuclear power plant in Serbia

Moscow may offer Serbia help to build a nuclear power plant using Russian technology, as part of international cooperation. This is an initiative led by Rosatom, the Russian state nuclear energy company.

Rosatom head Aleksei Likhachov stated that the project could contain 99% to 100% Russian technology, and that it could be developed through an international consortium of suppliers.

To date, Serbia does not have any nuclear power plants, while there is a legal ban on the construction of these components dating back to 1989, after the Chernobyl disaster brought preventive measures.

About 70% of Serbia's electricity is produced by coal-fired power plants, and the country is still heavily dependent on natural gas imports, mainly from Russia.

Talks between Russia and Serbia include proposals to use Rosatom technology in an international partnership, while discussions could lead to a review of the 1980s legal ban on nuclear power in Serbia./ CNA
