Former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott passes away at the age of 86

Former Labor Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has died aged 86. Prescott died after suffering from Alzheimer's.

The Labor veteran and former trade union activist served in Tony Blair's government between 1997 and 2007.

In a career spanning more than half a century, Lord Prescott was first elected as MP for Kingston on Hull East in 1970 and went on to hold the seat for almost 40 years.

Lord Prescott joined the Cabinet in 1983 with a responsibility for transport.

Between 1997 and 2007, he was deputy to former Prime Minister Tony Blair.

His retirement from the Commons and break from front-line politics was short-lived as five years later he was advising Ed Miliband and, in 2017, supporting Jeremy Corbyn.

Lord Prescott ceased to be a member of the House of Lords in July this year for absenteeism, having spoken in the chamber only once since suffering a stroke in 2019. He had not voted since February 2023, according to official data.

Born in Prestatyn, Wales, Lord Prescott left school at 15 and worked as an administrator in the Merchant Navy. He then studied at Ruskin College, Oxford, before entering politics./ CNA
