Iran strikes energy facilities/ Qatar halts production of liquefied natural gas

New Iranian attacks have been reported in Saudi Arabia, where a fire at an oil refinery has been brought "under control," while there have been similar attacks on a major gas plant in Qatar.

Qatar's state-owned energy company, QatarEnergy, announced that it has halted production of liquefied natural gas following alleged attacks by Iran on some of its facilities.

According to the company, the facilities attacked include Ras Laffan, an onshore gas processing base, and Mesaieed, another key facility for Qatar's natural gas production.

Qatar, known as one of the world's leading producers of liquefied natural gas, competes in this sector with the United States, Australia and Russia.

The latest attacks could have an impact on the global supply of liquefied natural gas, putting the security of energy targets in the Persian Gulf under scrutiny.

Iran's actions in the region constitute a "dangerous escalation" that threatens stability in the Middle East, says a joint statement from the US and six Gulf allies.

"Targeting civilians and non-combatant states is reckless behavior that undermines stability," the statement - which was distributed by Kuwait's foreign ministry - said.

The statement - originally published in Arabic - was issued jointly by Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and the US.

They say they "reclaim the right to self-defense" as Iranian attacks across the region continue.

According to the statement, the attacks occurred in Bahrain, Iraq (including the Kurdistan Region of Iraq), Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates./ CNA
