Hungary will deploy an air defense system in the northeastern part of the country, because the risk of an escalation of the war between Ukraine and Russia is "greater than ever before," said Hungarian Defense Minister Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin lowered the threshold for launching a nuclear attack in response to any conventional weapons attack against Russia, after the United States gave Ukraine permission to fire US missiles deep into Russia.

Ukraine used US long-range ATACMS missiles for the first time on Tuesday. Russia described this as a major escalation.

"We still believe that there will be peace as soon as possible, through diplomacy, not through war," Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky said in a video posted on Facebook on Wednesday evening.

"However, in order to prepare for all eventualities, I have ordered the deployment in the northeast of the country of the air defense and control systems that we have recently acquired," he said after a meeting with the Defense Council, which was convened by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, to talk about the developments in Ukraine.

"The risk of escalation of the Ukraine-Russia war is greater than ever before," he said.

Hungary, a member of NATO and the European Union, borders Ukraine.

The minister did not specify which parts of Hungary's air defense system will be deployed in the northeast.

Hungary's military, which has been undergoing a modernization program, bought Mistral air defense systems from France last year. In 2020, Hungary agreed to buy air defense systems, NASAMS, from American and Norwegian manufacturers.

The minister said that some units of the Hungarian army are on high alert./REL
