The volcano in Iceland erupts for the seventh time in a year

A volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland has erupted for the seventh time since last December, spewing lava from a large fissure.

The eruption began with little warning on Wednesday shortly before midnight and created a fissure about 3 kilometers long. However, this fissure is estimated to be smaller than the one from the last eruption in August, Iceland's Meteorological Office said.

"This is slightly smaller than the last eruption and the eruption that happened in May," said Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson, professor of geophysics, who observed the eruption from the air.

While the explosion does not pose a risk to air transport, authorities have warned of gas emissions across parts of the peninsula, including near the town of Grindavik.

Ongoing volcanic eruptions near Grindavik, which has a population of 3,800 and is located about 50 kilometers from the capital Reykjavik, have caused damage to infrastructure and property and forced many residents to relocate for their safety.

"Grindavik is not in danger, because it does not seem that this crack will widen, although anything can happen", said Magnus Tumi.

Residents of about 50 houses were immediately evacuated after the civil defense agency issued the alert, state broadcaster RUV./REL reported.
