The US court has ruled that Google acted illegally to suppress competition and maintain a monopoly over internet search and related advertising, the BBC reports.
Monday's landmark ruling is a major blow to Alphabet, Google's parent company, and could reshape the way the tech giants do business.
Google was sued by the US Department of Justice in 2020 for controlling about 90% of the internet search market.
It is one of several lawsuits filed against major technology companies as US antitrust authorities try to strengthen competition in the industry.
This case has been described as an existential threat to Google. It is still unclear what penalties Google and Alphabet will face as a result of the ruling. Fines or other remedies will be decided at a future hearing.
In his ruling, US judge Amit Mehta said Google had paid billions to ensure it was the default search engine on smartphones.
The Alphabet company said it plans to appeal the decision./ CNA
