The UN expels nine workers who may have had a hand in the October 7 attack

Nine members of the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) may have been involved in the attack by Hamas - the terrorist group declared by the United States and other powers - carried out on October 7, 2023 against Israel, the United Nations has said. .

Farhan Haq from the UN announced that the contracts of all nine people have been terminated.

He said that the UN has completed the investigation, following the suspicions raised by Israel that UNRWA staff were involved in the attack.

In the attack on October 7, 1,200 Israelis were killed and another 240 were taken hostage.

Haq did not specify how exactly these workers were involved in the attack.

"For us, any participation in the attack is a great betrayal of the work we must do on behalf of the Palestinian people," he said.

The UN has investigated 19 members of UNRWA, after Israel suspected that 12 of them participated in the attack.

Israel later claimed that more than 450 members of the UNRWA agency are members of terrorist groups, but a UN assessment in April found that Israel has not provided any evidence for those claims.

UNRWA, the agency that employs 13,000 people in Gaza, said in March that some of its workers had reported being pressured by Israeli authorities to make false statements, including under the ban.

Most countries had withdrawn funding to this UN agency, due to Israeli assumptions.

In July, the United Kingdom and several countries returned the funds, while the United States, which has allocated the most funds to the agency, has not announced that it intends to return the funds.

Following the Hamas attack, the Israeli military vowed to destroy the group and launched ground and air offensives in Gaza.

As a result of the war, more than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to the Palestinian health authorities./ REL
