The EU adds 28 Belarusian officials and "propagandists" to the

On Monday, the European Union added 28 officials and "propagandists" of Belarus to the blacklist, related to the suppression of the opponents, the authoritarian leader, Alexander Lukashenka.

The 27-member bloc has sanctioned the Belarusian government several times since the authorities began cracking down on protests against Lukashenka's regime in 2020.

The EU has increased sanctions against Belarus also because of the role of this country in starting Russia's war in Ukraine.

With the latest decision, the number of Belarusian individuals on the EU blacklist has reached 261.

Lukashenka and his family members are already on that list.

Among the individuals sanctioned on Thursday are Irina Akulovich, head of the national news agency BelTA, and TV presenter Nikita Rachilovsky.

"These propagandists of the regime have deliberately spread false information about the repression carried out by the state authorities", the EU said through a statement.

Lukashenka, Russia's closest ally, launched a crackdown on protests in August 2020 after his election victory claim sparked mass protests.

The human rights group Viasna estimates that Belarus has more than 1,400 political prisoners, and that thousands more have fled the country.

Lukashenka has been leading Belarus with a strong fist for three decades./ REL
