Iran says it does not want regional escalation, but Israel "must be

Iran is not seeking an escalation of regional tensions, but believes Israel must be punished in order to prevent further instability.

This is what the spokesman of the Foreign Ministry of Iran said on August 5, after the political chief of Hamas - the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - Ismail Haniyeh was killed last week in Tehran.

"Iran wants to have stability in the region, but this can only be achieved by punishing the aggressor and creating deterrence against the adventurism of the Zionist regime [Israel]," said spokesman Nasser Kanaani, adding that a response from Tehran is inevitable.

Kanaani called on Washington to stop supporting Israel, adding that the international community has failed to protect stability in the region and should support "punishment of the aggressor".

Even the top commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, again said on Monday that Israel "will be punished."

Tehran and Iran-linked groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah have accused Israel of killing Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh. Israeli officials have not claimed responsibility for the murder./REL
