Temperatures in Antarctica ten degrees above average

Land temperatures across large parts of the Antarctic ice sheets rose an average of 10 degrees above normal in July.

While temperatures remain below zero on the polar land, which is shrouded in darkness at this time of year, deep in the southern hemisphere in winter, temperatures reportedly reached 28 degrees Celsius on several days, The Guardian reported.

The globe has experienced 12 months of record heat, with temperatures consistently exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, considered the threshold for avoiding the worst climate meltdown.

Michael Dukes, director of forecasting at the Met Office, said that while individual daily temperatures were surprisingly high, far more significant was the average rise over the month.

"Usually you can't just look at one month for a climate trend, but it's consistent with what the models are predicting," Dukes said, noting that in Antarctica generally that kind of warming in the winter and continuing into the summer months can lead to ice sheets collapsing./ CNA
